Modern Conveniences

Tuesday I ventured out to the home site.  This included dropping Corey off at work around 6:30 am and then heading west.  I arrived at the site just before 9:00 am.  Our driveway had been poured on Monday so it was very exciting to see that!

Yippee! We have a driveway! The team from Keystone Concrete did an awesome job with the design and installation!

Then I noticed our front door had been put in place!

A little bit of stain and some trim paint and it will be very inviting. You should see the doorbell - it is a Texas star too!

My reason for the trip was our appliances were to be delivered.  A received a call from the builder that we were the last stop on the delivery list but I was already in route so I continued.  I had brought along some errands to run.  I mailed a package to my niece from the Luling Post Office.  Then I headed to Lockhart to ship a box and check out the little quilt store there.  As I was returning to my car from walking the Lockhart town square the builder called and the appliance truck was 20-30 minutes from our home, so I headed back to the site.

At the front gate I escorted a trade to a new neighbors future home site – he is their pool builder and I was able to meet Penny.  We had met her husband a couple of weeks ago.  Lots happening in the Settlement.

By the time I arrived at our home the appliances had been unloaded and the installers were having a couple of issues.  The propane line for the stove was too high.  The drain for the ice maker was to far forward.  Luckily the plumbers showed up at that point and they were able to get to work.  Unfortunately the appliance installation will continue another day as we do not have power to the house yet.  The good news is – all the appliances were correct and they look GREAT!

The plumbers also installed the fixtures for the bathtub.  I hope that faucet reaches the tub – Corey asked that question when I showed him the photo – I need to check that next time I am out there.  (Hopefully the plumber confirmed this!)

The ceiling is all in place in the great room, all they need to do is stain it now.  A little back story here – the painters came out an pre-stained the ceiling so only minor touch ups would need to be done – BUT they stained the wrong side! DUH!!!  So our ceiling will now be stained in place!

And to finish it off…….

ALWAYS take time out to enjoy the little things! This beautiful little flower bush is blooming the middle of our sand pile!

About 10 miles into my long ride home I encountered a major rain storm.  I finally pulled over in Schulenburg for about 20 minutes before I could see to get back on the road.  Still had rain but everyone on the I-10 was playing nice and being considerate so we were able to continue.  THEN…I hit Katy – my gosh the traffic was horrendous; between the weather and it being 5:30 pm it was a mess!  I finally got to Corey’s work about 7:00 pm, about 2 hours later than anticipated.  But safe and sound and that is what is important!

May your day be filled with lots of little things that make you smile!

Inside Sticks – starting to take shape

Well I want to post an update on the house and I think you will get the idea if I caption the photos properly.  Hubby and I have done several remodels over the years and I have always enjoyed that process.  When it came time to “design” our forever home it was really hard for me because there were no boundaries.  For a girl who really likes to color outside the box I was surprised to learn that sometimes I like being in a box.  When you are doing a remodel (on a budget) you have to keep in mind load bearing walls, where the plumbing is, incorporating the new with the old and having them blend nicely.

With the new home design I had a blank piece of paper – and I kept drawing perfectly square boxes and rectangles so I wasn’t getting any character.   I realized I had to find a roofline I liked for a single story house and then I could tweak the floor plan (thanks to my friend Patty – for unknowingly pointing me in the right direction).

Hubby purchased a software program that he could use to show me what things would look like, including floor plan, fly overs and walk throughs – very cool stuff!  And not terribly expensive.

For the next several months we worked on “our” floor plan.  At one point I told hubby my quilt studio wasn’t big enough – he asked how much bigger I wanted it – I said “I don’t know – just bigger”  So he worked with it and coincidentally when the quilt studio grew so did the garage for the house – maybe that is why I did not hear too much complaining from the peanut gallery when I asked for more space!

Then we started “interviewing” builders and I fell for Shay at Jimmy Jacobs Custom Homes.  Shay was our sales person and from the get go she set our expectations that “No, you cannot build that house for the price you think you can!” She LISTENED to us and returned phone calls and emails – she is fabulous!  Although she has left Jimmy Jacobs we are still friends!

We have another kink in our build process – we are 3 hours away from our build site – another reason we chose Jimmy Jacobs Custom Homes to build our home, we walked through numerous homes they were building in various states of construction and liked what we saw.  As you know we poured concrete on April 17th (wow, in my mind I thought it was March 17th and was amazed by how quickly everything is going – it is actually going twice as fast as I thought!) and here is our project 5 weeks later on May 25th.

So enough gabbing from me – here are some photos……

When we started designing the great room, we tried moving the fireplace all around the room - only to end up with with it where it was to begin with. This will be all rock with a nice size hearth.

To the left of the fireplace is my “wall” of windows, 3 windows that are each 3’x6′ and a set of french doors that are 6’x8′ that lead to the covered back porch.

Lots of duct work for this house and hubby, Mr. Engineer is VERY impressed with how much bracing and framing is holding that roof up!  Regarding the HVAC – it will be nice when they have the correct furnace units up there, we determined this past weekend they ordered and installed electric units, our exhibits called for propane!  Hopefully those are in stock and not special order!

The fireplace was to the left of the arch so this is the other corner of the great room. I planned space here for a beautiful cedar table, chairs and bench we have that is bistro height - it will be fun to sit here and play monopoly with the grandkids!

The arch to the left leads to the master bedroom.  The arch to the right is from the entry hallway.

This is the pantry it is just shy of 5' wide x 8' deep with a pocket door. Hubby will be doing the build out in this room so I get just what I want!

The pantry is located just past the garage – very convenient for unloading groceries!

AND see that long skinny room with the high window and a pocket door? That is the "closet" for the studio - it is 6' wide by 19' long and the ceiling is over 11' high! And guess who will be doing the build out for this closet - yep Hubby!

The pocket door is currently installed with the opening on the wrong side but that is a quick fix.  I love love love this closet space!  And next to the closet is the studio powder bath.  As a quilter I love design walls, but I also love natural light and lots of it.  When you get a tour of the studio you will see the doors are full glass, big windows in the corner of the room and then a high window, but tons and tons of design wall space.  And the ceilings are over 11′  WOW!

What is the 1 thing your dream home must have?

Go out and make the most of this day!  I will be teaching members of the Bay Area Quilt Guild how to make the Cactus Flower Table Runner!

240 Crockett Lane – Building the Future

Well we did it!  We signed the contract to build our dream home in Luling, TX.  We are both so excited to continue with this adventure.  We purchased our land in 2007 and started seriously designing the house December 2012.  We looked at model homes and made our lists.  We talked to many friends that have been through the building process and then we interviewed builders.  We have chosen Jimmy Jacobs Homebuilders, we have walked through a lot of their homes in process, visited a few of their model homes and talked to many of their customers that are in the middle of building their dream home or have just completed their dream home.  Everyone is extremely happy!  I know we will be too!  Shay Cosgrove is our sales person and we have found her to be a delight to work with.  We found Jay’s knowledge to be invaluable when he met with us on our site and helped us figure out placement of our new home.  For the next several months we are going to be busy busy busy running the roads between Seabrook, Luling, New Braunfels and San Antonio as we choose colors, door knobs, faucets, tile and all of that other fun stuff!
