Thank a Teacher!

Little Toot has had such a wonderful time at school this year.  Her teacher, Mrs. Hall was put on bed rest a couple of weeks ago as she is near term with her first child.  So close to the end of the year this could’ve really affected such young minds to have a new teacher – but Little Toot just loves her new teacher, Ms White and wanted to give her something.  I asked if she would like to come over and make something for her teachers and she of course said yes.

I had found a couple of art activities on Pinterest that I really liked and showed them to Little Toot and she said yes.  So we had to practice on paper first.

Well I think that is as good as I can get on paper – as I tell my clients when I am drawing quilting designs with pencil and paper – “I can’t draw on paper, but I can do some wonderful things with needle and thread!”  I wonder why that is?  I am sure it is a mind thing!

So now on to the cloth – we traced her hand with a pencil and then I did some thread work.  Most of you have seen my very large quilting machine, but for this task I felt it would be more engaging for little toot if we used the Bernina – so I attached my free motion quilting foot – dropped my feed dogs and took a deep breath!

Dang – I forgot to take a picture of this one before she added her rainbow of colors!

I hope her teachers will enjoy these little gifts – she had so much fun making them.  They are approximately 8″x10″ so not to large, but bigger than a rug mug.

She spent the night and momma was picking her up for Sunday school the next morning – she wasn’t very motivated to get ready until I asked her if she wanted me to curl her hair – well up the stairs she zoomed.  And here is the little cutie patootie!

She told me has 3 1/2 days of school left and then it is summer break and then “Camp Dee-Dee” at the end of June.  More about that later!

It’s A Quilt Show – Kerrville Style

The “Hill Country Quilt Guild” held their bi-annual quilt show this past weekend.  The hubby and I headed out very early Saturday morning (it is about a 6 hour drive).  We stopped by our property in Luling and wandered through 4 houses that are currently being built in the “neighborhood”.  We plan to break ground in 2014 – pretty exciting!

Back to the quilt show – after we left Luling we found ourselves driving in heavy downpours of rain, apparently San Antonio area received over 12″ of rain between Friday night and Saturday evening!  WOW!  After stopping for a quick lunch of empanadas and other delights at “Beto’s” in San Antonio (Find out more about this treasure at Diner’s Drive-ins and Dives), we were back on the road again.

We arrived at the show and my friend, Susie, met us there.  She is a member of the Hill Country Quilt Guild and had a few quilts in the show (with ribbons on them!).

One of Susie’s quilts – I quilted this for her – her quilts are a delight to quilt – she is very good piecer and I love her colors and pattern choices!

I quilted the quilt below for Susie earlier this year – I really enjoyed this one!  What I enjoyed almost as much was I sent her my king-size triple 4-patch to quilt and I just got it back.  That was a GREAT TRADE!

Susie's Quilt - she added the pieced sashings as well as the applique border. The pattern had plain sashing and border.

This quilt of Susie’s was made as a block of the month from Pinwheels and Posies.  Each block is the same (except for fabric placement), Susie quilted this one!

Another student, Linda, was also working at the show and had a ribbon (or 2) on her Glacier Star Quilt that was started in a class I taught at Pinwheels and Posies.

Kim’s quilting (A Busy Bobbin) was honored with the ribbon for Best Machine Quilting – WELL DESERVED!  Our local longarm bee is excited to have Kim as our speaker Monday night at our monthly meeting.  She and Linda B. will be joining us and talking about the rulers Kim uses and how she fills all that empty space with all of that gorgeous quilting.

This quilt was a group quilt.  They started with a photo, cut it apart.  Each member of the group was given a section of the photo to reproduce in cloth – and now you see the quilt put back together.  I think this would be really fun to do – what do you think?

And of course I left the BEST for the last – Best of Show went to this beautiful quilt – this pattern is Ladies of the Sea by Sue Garman.  Sue is a friend of mine and she was working on this quilt when we travelled to Brigham City, UT a few years back.  If I remember correctly the compass corner stones were inspired by some wall art in the facility where she was teaching (I went as her helper because I am originally from UT).  It is a marvel to watch Sue work she is AMAZING!  I hope Sue will enjoy the substitution this quilt maker made to the original quilt.  The submarine honors a family member if I remember correctly.

Never too young (or too old!)

Today Mr. B came to visit while momma helped out a friend. I was working on my “Crackers” (Crackers is a new pattern by Quiltworx.com) quilt and had chosen a quilting design I thought he could help with. After momma left I asked Mr. B if he would like to quilt and he said “sure”. Then he saw that I meant the BIG machine and he was very excited. As I explained the rules he was all “Yes, Ma’am” to every rule – he knew this was a very big deal!

He was pretty proud of himself, this lasted about 3 passes and then he was off to play cars, then on to the computer for a little pbskids and some starfall. We also snuck in a game of backgammon, he has only played once before but he remembered part of the setup and he is learning a little bit more each time we play.

For lunch he wanted to make bean and cheese burritos and then have ice cream. After we ate our burritos we headed out to pick some fresh strawberries and blueberries to go with our ice cream.

Now he is coloring and momma is on her way – what a fun diversion for my day.

Tomorrow Little Toot and I will be making gifts for her teachers!

The Happiest Place on Earth

The Happiest Place on Earth

A few years back in a galaxy far far away I took my husband to Disney World for his 50th Birthday.  We had so much fun that we called our son and his wife and requested grandchildren so we could bring them with us next time.  Well they fulfilled the request and we scheduled the trip!

Now scheduling a trip like this can be tricky, you don’t want to go when it is too crowded, but you also want it to be spring when all the flowers are in bloom etc.  You also need to take into consideration various work schedules, school schedules and GRADUATIONS!  (see how I am able to sneak this big congratulations in!)

Kat has worked so hard and we are very proud of her!
Kat has worked so hard and we are very proud of her!

We all agreed that we wouldn’t tell the kids until we were in route – momma decided while we were waiting for the plane would be the best time.  She primed them the night before by telling them they were going to need to help clean the house and cars on Saturday, but they would get up early and go out for breakfast before beginning their day of labor.  They assumed the suitcases were full of cleaning supplies.  They could not figure out why they were at the airport and why were Grandpa and Grandma there too?  Such gullible children at those ages!  I don’t think it sunk in until we were on the plane in the air headed to DISNEY WORLD!

When will our plane get here - "We're going to Disney World!"

So earlier this year dates were chosen and grandpa went to work on the details.  We had an amazing experience while dining at Wilderness lodge our first trip we decided then that we would stay there on our next visit.  So Grandpa reserved our “villas” at Wilderness Lodge.

He also decided it would be fun for the kiddos (and especially their mom) to arrive at the lodge in style, so he rented a limo for the ride to/from the airport, including a grocery stop to stock the villas.

Sweet Ride!

We checked in, found our rooms, stocked the fridge, had a snack and headed to the Magic Kingdom.  Now if we had tried to plan this entrance it never would’ve happened, BUT the afternoon parade of characters was just starting as we walked in!  Yes I got choked up!  And I knew then that LIFE IS GOOD!  (I know it all the time, but this was so amazing to watch their little eyes light up and see the wonderment of all this world holds for them!)

After the parade we needed sustenance so we stopped at Casey’s for hotdogs (too big to eat if the truth be told) but we dined in front of the castle and watched the world go by!  Then we headed off in search of stuff to do!  We walked through Swiss Family Robinson’s tree house – Mr. B wanted to do that again!  But we talked him to the magic carpet ride instead.

While waiting for the magic carpet ride I started to get hives, many of my quilting friends know about these spontaneous hives I get – not sure if they are food or environment related.  I get them about 6 times a year and benedryl has always cured them.  So I popped a benedryl (yes I now always have these with me!), and hoped for the best.  After the ride the hives weren’t better, but they didn’t seem to be worse so we headed for Pirates of the Caribbean, while in line (in the shade) for this ride the hives became worse, I took the 2nd benedryl and stated that if I didn’t feel better after this ride, we would hit first aid.  Well that lasted about 3 minutes and pulled my husband out of line and we headed for a place to sit down, I was dizzy and nauseas and when I saw a custodian with a Disney badge I asked my husband to “GET HIM!”, I knew there was no way I could walk and I wasn’t improving.  The “custodian” calmly asked me a few questions and then got on his radio and requested the paramedics.  He then proceeded to ask me questions every now and then, I guess one time I did not respond and he was back on his radio upping the status, at that point the paramedics were just around the corner but we couldn’t see them.  They put me on the gurney, wheeled me to some shade, gave me oxygen and took my blood pressure – it was very very very low.  I was feeling better but the numbers weren’t lying .  (Apparently that is because they had me with my feet up now and out of the direct sun).  Needless to say my 2nd ride at Disney World started with an A and ended with an E  – if you said AMBULANCE you are correct.

No words needed!

The first evening the our kids and grandkids were able to watch the Electric Parade, which is one of my favorites at Disney.  Our day had started very early so they did bypass the fireworks over the castle.  As they returned to the lodge, my husband and I were just finishing our meal so they joined us for dessert.

Day 2 we decided to sleep until we woke up and then head back to Magic Kingdom, we rode some rides – Splash Mountain was first up and then Thunder Railroad (which neither child liked one bit!).  While we were having lunch it started to rain, we were able to fit in a few more rides in between the rain, Mr. B’s favorite was “Small World”  he wanted to ride it 10 times.  Many I love that boy!  The TeaCups were on little Toot’s list of rides, we found them but they were being upgraded!  Guess we will have to come back!  Day 2 finished with dinner and fireworks at Epcot – the kids were mesmerized!

Day 3 was an Animal Kingdom day, Mr. B and I were in the sweet spot (the wettest spot) on the rapids and were spent the rest of the day drying out.  Seeing the animals on the safari was fun and searching for animals by their footprint and “poop” was another adventure for the kiddos.  We lost Mr. B for about 3 minutes, seemed like forever, we were reminded to always look forward for that little man – he doesn’t backtrack!  Our afternoon was wet with rain over at Hollywood studios – but Kat got to ride Tower of Terror twice so she was a happy camper.  The kids and I went in search of characters!  We had hoped to watch the laser show – but the rain was not cooperating.

Day 4 was our last – we spent this one at Epcot (another rainy day)  but we met many characters the highlight of the day was Soaring – we weren’t sure Mr. B would go – but he LOVED it!  Then we headed back to the hotel to swim and slide!  I guess we didn’t need to leave Houston after all!

The limo picked us up at 6:30 am and we were all exhausted.  Mr. B fell asleep in my lap on the plane, little toot had an airsick episode – grandpa said he didn’t know there were that many airsick bags on a plane – as helpful passengers decided they should send them all his way!  Unfortunately Mr. B has been ill with tummy issues and ear infection since we returned home.

Even with all the drama and weather – I can’t wait to go back to Disney again.  The “cast” members are amazing – from the “custodian” to the “maid” to all of the characters and their helpers.  Our experience was amazing!

No Feathers Allowed – well maybe just a couple!

I have been really enjoying the quilting for the “modern quilts” .  My friend Cindy, from the Quilted Garage has really been an inspiration for me to try more of this style of quilting.

So I had a customer bring me a king size Labyrinth Quilt.  (The Labyrinth Quilt is designed by Debby Maddy of Calico Carriage Quilt Designs).  Several asian style fabrics had been used and this quilt was not going to lend itself to my love of all quilts must have feathers!  As I let this quilt “talk” to me and kept hearing my “inner Cindy” talk to me I knew what needed to be done!  Fear not – there is a feather or two in there, but they are very few in number.  I hope you will enjoy this quilt!

Retreating – Round Top Style!

If you are a quilter you know how much fun a “retreat” can be!  My friend has a home in Round Top, TX and 5 of us were invited for a wonderful weekend of sewing, eating and shopping.  It was the weekend of the Round Top Antique Show – WOW

My friend and I arrived on Thursday early afternoon we unloaded the car, there was plenty of food and all 6 sewing machines to be setup.  Then we toured the grounds – they have 12 acres and it is so peaceful.  A few bluebonnets were out and several other spring flowers.  And then we loaded up the bird feeders – and then we listened and watched the birds fly in.  She has a wide variety of feathered friends that come to feed.

That evening we sewed until the wee hours (about 1:00 am) and then finally called it a night.  We were again about 7:00 and enjoyed our coffee and the birds again.  The rest of our group arrived just in time for lunch, we unloaded their truck and realized we had enough food to sustain us for about 2 weeks!  After lunch we hit the road for some shopping and I was overwhelmed – I have only been to this particular antique show 1 other time and it was even bigger and better than I remembered.  After a couple of hours some of us headed back to the house to relax and sew.

Over the course of the weekend there was much laughter, much eating and even some stitching.  However what I seemed to capture with my camera was the scenery – the sunset and the birds.  I hope you too will enjoy!

Photo Challenged!

I have a great camera but let me tell you, it is not what the camera can do, but what the nut behind it can do – I am not a photographer – but I love to take pictures.  My cousin posted some beautiful photos of a dragonfly she captured.  They were amazing.  I was so enchanted by these photos I decided to stop quilting and take a stroll through the yard to take some pictures.  (Notice hers are photos, mine are merely pictures!)  I did not have any dragonflies in the yard, but I did find a bee pollinating the lemon blossoms, this is the 2nd or 3rd bloom set this year and I think we already have a couple hundred lemons going.  So here is my attempt at sharing some “pictures” with you!

The Birth(day) of a Wonderful Man

So many things to blog about…

So I must choose something right?  Well lets talk about my wonderful husband, his birthday was last week and this year we celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary and we have been together over half my life.  He works hard, and like his father he likes to garden, has started dabbling with the guitar over the past few years.  He is an amazing man that I am blessed to call my husband and I truly cannot imagine a better life – I am probably the luckiest girl I know!

Anyway – back to the hubby’s birthday.  While he worked I ventured out to pick up an item for the house, a steam cleaner for the carpets and teasingly posted on facebook that this would be his birthday present – most of my friends found this a very unimpressive present.  Hubby got a quick out of it and told me he would get me a new guitar for Mother’s Day.

We had a nice dinner outside at Boondoggles, pizza, burgers and popcorn shrimp were on the agenda for the family including our son and his family.

I have shared my mom’s family history letter she wrote for our son, now I will share my husbands.  This was typed out double spaced about 1992.

Corey D. Green – Life

I was born Corey Dal Green on May 8th 1955 at LDS hospital in SLC, UT to parents Kendrick Lavern Green (SLC) and Norma Jean Robbins (Scipio, UT).  Lived the first year of my life in a small house in Kentucky Avenue in Holiday, a small east side section of SLC, later moved to 2895 Cherry Blossom Lane (also in Holiday) where I spent the rest of my youth (my parents still live at this address).  I attended a number of different grade schools while I was growing up, the first of which was William Penn a small grade school in which I remember feeling my first earthquake and learning that President John F. Kennedy has been assassinated in Dallas, TX.  I also attended Crestview Elementary  and Howard R. Driggs both were much larger schools which I have very fond memories.

My junior high years were spent a Churchill Junior High school where I was involved with the chess club and the volleyball team, but most of the time I spent working on gocarts, minibikes and other mechanical things.  I purchased my first car (a jeep) at the age of 15, (a year before I could drive) and spent the year fixing it up so that I could have transportation when I received my drivers license.  Skyline High School was where I spent my high school years, my jeep and I were invincible and I spent almost every day tinkering with it.

I attended the University of Utah for a couple of years but left early, later I was accepted the FAA academy in Oklahoma City to train as an Air Traffic Controller, which lasted a little over one year.

I met my wife, Denise, at a party and it was love at first sight, were were married about fourteen months later and have been happily married every since.  After we were married I returned to the University of Utah, and with a great deal of help from my wife and three long years of study obtained a bachelors degree in civil engineering.  I now live in Sandy, UT with Denise and Andy our son and em employed as a structural engineer with an engineering firm here in SLC.

The End

As I re-typed this to share with all of you – I am reminded how important these letters are to our family history.  It is what makes us – us!  So I hope you will each make a goal to write your family history for your children and grandchildren.  If you are lucky enough to still have your parents and/or grandparents around you need to spend time with them, ask them to tell you the stories of their life adventures.  Better yet ask your aunt – she has all the really good history on your parents! If they are unable to write it down then you should.  I also realized that we have added over 20 years of adventures to our life story and we need to chronicle that for our son and his children.

Quilt Til You WILT!

As a Certified Instructor for Judy Niemeyer Quilts I was so excited about the latest technique of the month quilt – Mariner’s Compass.  While this pattern is designed to teach a new technique each month I knew my students wouldn’t want to wait that long to finish their quilts.  So I worked with Peggy at Pinwheels and Posies in Dickinson, TX and we came up with a mini-retreat – aka Quilt Til You Wilt!  So on March 15th we started our first adventure.

We invited our students to come sew starting Friday am at 9:00 am until Midnight, we started again at 7:00 am Saturday and yep we sewed until Midnight.  Sunday was a short day for us 7:00 am until 2:00 but they sewed every minute of those 7 hours too!  Peggy kept our students well nourished from an italian sandwich for breakfast one morning to homemade chicken salad.  We also had catering from a few of the local restaurants.  One student made us chocolate dipped strawberries and we were also treated to “Nothing Bundt Cake”.  Ice cream sundaes were also a late night snack!

We had a total of 9 students, class max.  I like for each student to have their own 8’ table and their own design wall.  We also have ironing stations setup and the shop supplies all of the cutting mats.  In the evening we were able to also use the shop work tables.  3 of the students had not paper pieced before or had very little experience.  I was so tickled with how much progress they made.

We are gearing up for another session starting April 12th with a new group of students and plan to schedule more of these for the coming months.  We will also be including Glacier Star as a future Quilt Til You Wilt option.  I love teaching and there is nothing more fun that to watch the students odd shapes of fabric turn into these beautiful quilts!

Now I am off to spend the weekend quilting until I am wilting!

It’s not a quilt until…….

Several years ago I had the opportunity to take a workshop led by the fabulous Mary Lou Weidman, she asked us two very important questions at the beginning of class, the first question was “What is your favorite food?”  The second question “What is favorite thing about quilting?”  My answer to the 2nd question was “Sharing information I have learned with new quilters” or something to that effect.  I host two bees that are focused on just that – sharing information.  Today’s blog will share with you what we did in our “Longarm Bee” on Monday.

This group email list contains about 80 names – we have a monthly attendance of approximately 30-35 attendees.  This months topic was “backings”  I will do a blog post in the future with photos sharing the process I like to use for my backings.  I believe there is a good class on Craftsy showing options for this as well and as of this writing it remains a freebie from Craftsy.

We also have show and share – here are some of the quilts that were shown.

Grandma and Grandpa helped this 10 year old make her first quilt. She did the quilting all by herself on Grandpa's gammill.

Sara had to finish the quilting on this quilt prior to her machine being sold. She is upgrading and through the bee a new owner for her previous machine had been found.

We also have “how would you quilt this”  here are some photos of quilts that we tossed out ideas for.  This is my favorite part of the bee!

Patricia made this cute little quilt - we gave her several ideas - but what we really wanted to know is "Where did you get that really cute fabric?" We want some!
