Dreams – that you didn’t realize you had!

Note: I have not created a blog in a really long time so hopefully this will all work….

So today a fellow shop owner shared this sentiment and it really hit home! Yes I have seen this many times over the years, but this year, 2020, more than any other has caused me to reflect on what really is my dream! It is being a quilt shop owner! Sharing my quilting knowledge with all of you and being an inspiration as best I can!

So a little back story! 1995 my friend Holly and I did a lot of crafts. We decided to sign up for a quilt class. The class was to be held at the original Thimbles & Threads in Draper, UT. It was a tiny little location with a screen door that went “whack” when it closed. Everyone was so nice and inspiring and I just knew I wanted to be a quilter! My husband ventured to this shop with me at some point and made a random comment about one day I would own a quilt shop! Seed is planted but I did not realize it at the time.

Fast forward to 2015, yes 20 years later! We have moved to Luling and are blessed beyond belief! He is chauffeuring me to one of my teaching gigs – where I will show pretty quilts I have made and hopefully inspire a few quilters to try something new! He asks if I have thought about opening a quilt shop! Well in my mind that seed that was planted 20 years prior is now a TREE! and I have permission! I start looking at properties in our town and a local quilter, who is also a building owner has just completed renovation of an old building on the main drag of town – and it is beautiful! This was our home for just over 2 years and then our wonderful building owner made it possible for us to move to one of her other locations and we now have an amazing location and a huge classroom. In June when we could finally invite quilters back to sew and we heard the giggling and visiting that occurs in a quilt classroom we knew we were back! 2020 you have been a tough one – but we are going to survive!

Thank you to each and everyone of you that follow us on Facebook, Instagram, our website and our store! We are here for you and we are grateful you are part of our dream!

Dee and the crew at HDQ – including Corey, Lindz, Liz and Michelle!

Just where have you been?

So it has been a while since I last posted (December!).  So sorry to keep you out of the loop.  Facebook gets a few posts and then there is mail chimp for the shop communications.  This year has been flying by in a whirl!  We have participated in several guild quilt shows, I have been teaching across Texas for guilds and shops and at retreats!  REGISTRATION for our Kids Kamps are happening now!

We just completed our first year as a brick and mortar quilt shop and we are very excited for the future.  Our next big event is our Customer Appreciation “Quilt Thump” on Saturday, June 17th right here in Luling, TX.  Our quilters have been collecting “seeds” and will be rewarded for supporting our first year with chances on raffle bags and auction items.  Please call 830-875-5432 to rsvp that you will be attending the quilt thump!  It won’t be the same without YOU!

We add to our tools and notions wall almost weekly, our list of classes is varied with a variety of teachers as well.

Need inspiration?  We will be starting a wearables group soon!  Are you interested?  Let us know!

And on the home front we had an exciting storm last night.  As I washed dishes I realized the water pressure was low – hubby went to check and came back in “You won’t believe what the problem is”  See for yourself!  Luckily I am married to Mr. Fixit and we were back in business in time to go watch the sunset over the horizon!

Stay safe and dry!  Stop by the shop and visit for awhile!

The Next Chapter

I may have mentioned in an earlier post that my word for the year is “ACTUALIZE”.  I wanted something that would inspire me to do the things I really want to do and not procrastinate.  Life is short, make the most of it.

Back in 1995 I started quilting, I think the seed was planted then that I wanted to own a quilt shop and share my new passion with everyone I came in touch with.  A few years later while taking a workshop from Mary Lou Weidman she asked each of us what our favorite part of quilting was; I replied sharing what I know with other quilters.  Time Warp to 2011 I became a certified instructor for Judy Niemeyer Quilting aka Quiltworx and I have had a blast.  Traveling around Texas and even outside of Texas to teach and vend at shows has been so much fun; but I want to be more productive in my own community.

As you recall in 2014 we made the BIG move to the SMALL town of Luling, TX.  There is just something about this town that calls upon me to make an impact!  While we are not residents of Luling; we live just past the county line; I consider Luling my new hometown!

So begins the next chapter, and I am so excited about it!  I have found a perfect little building right on the main drag.  The owners have just completed a fabulous renovation and I must say it is full of charm and excitement.  I can’t wait to share the inside with you – but for now you will have to whet your appetite with a few photos of the outside and the town.

For you to really appreciate the work that has been done I will start with a before photo from google.

Stay tuned as I will be sharing photos from the inside soon.  You will also get a sneak peek at the fabrics that will be lining our shelves!

Looking forward to seeing you all VERY SOON!

We are On Fire! Fire Island Hosta “part 2”

For those of you that follow the blog you will remember I taught a fabulous group of quilters way back in January at The Wimberley Quilt Ranch.  Our quilt of choice was Fire Island Hosta.  If you want to re-visit that blog post click HERE!

The end of June found me back at the Quilt Ranch and this will be a 2-part post.  This is part 1 (well part 2 of the Fire Island Hosta, part 1 of the June Retreat!)  This retreat was for “Beginners and Finishers!”  We had 2 finishers from our January retreat and I would like to highlight those quilts here along with “Lucy’s” Fire Island Hosta which is HOT OFF the Long Arm!  I had so much fun quilting her quilt – I love whimsical quilting and her quilt was just the key for some of that fun!

So here is to our Fire Island Finishers!

Click here to get your pattern!  What to join us for a retreat?  I have several on the schedule!

Mary's finish! I am so excited for Mary! Her 2nd Paper-pieced quilt! She also got her borders on her quilt during the retreat but I did not get a photo! (She also started another quilt - see part 2)

Diane's finish! Her colors were scrumptious! She added a little 3d accent around her leaves to make them stand out a little more!
