Beginners & Finishers! Wimberley June 2015

As I promised yesterday – we have our 2nd post for the Beginners and Finishers Retreat from a couple of weeks ago!

We had 2 styles of beginners – the first being those that are new to paper-piecing and/or Judy Niemeyer Patterns.  In this group we had some working on Total Eclipse and 1 working on Dancing Batiks.

In our other group of beginners – we had those that are familiar with Judy’s patterns and paper-piecing in general and they chose to BEGIN new projects!  (not included in the photo’s is Ronda’s arcs for her Flowers for My Wedding Ring – can’t wait for September’s Wedding Ring Retreat to see more of this one!)  I also missed getting pictures of Terri’s Glacier Star she left a day early to play with grand babies!

JoAnn worked on her Prairie Star. She had this quilt top all together and decided she wanted to brighten it up.... so she took it apart and remade the Geese and H units with lighter background. She also took out the center CS units and went with a lighter background and then added the absolute last square inch of the lighter background to her LS units! Not something I would've done BUT the it was a dramatic difference and really added a lot of zing to her quilt!

And just some other fun stuff to share!  I should’ve taken photos of the food – Ronda always takes really good care of us in that department!

Terri's show and share - I may not have captured her Glacier Star but that is ok but this quilt was AMAZING. She did NOT strip piece those 9 patches - they are each individual squares!

We are On Fire! Fire Island Hosta “part 2”

For those of you that follow the blog you will remember I taught a fabulous group of quilters way back in January at The Wimberley Quilt Ranch.  Our quilt of choice was Fire Island Hosta.  If you want to re-visit that blog post click HERE!

The end of June found me back at the Quilt Ranch and this will be a 2-part post.  This is part 1 (well part 2 of the Fire Island Hosta, part 1 of the June Retreat!)  This retreat was for “Beginners and Finishers!”  We had 2 finishers from our January retreat and I would like to highlight those quilts here along with “Lucy’s” Fire Island Hosta which is HOT OFF the Long Arm!  I had so much fun quilting her quilt – I love whimsical quilting and her quilt was just the key for some of that fun!

So here is to our Fire Island Finishers!

Click here to get your pattern!  What to join us for a retreat?  I have several on the schedule!

Mary's finish! I am so excited for Mary! Her 2nd Paper-pieced quilt! She also got her borders on her quilt during the retreat but I did not get a photo! (She also started another quilt - see part 2)

Diane's finish! Her colors were scrumptious! She added a little 3d accent around her leaves to make them stand out a little more!

Hot Hot Hot – Fire Island Hosta – Retreat!

I had the privilege this weekend to teach a fabulous group of women at a quilt retreat I held at the Wimberley Quilt Ranch.  This was the 2nd time I had hosted a retreat here and I really enjoy this facility.  This time we also had the owner of the retreat center join us.  It was a pleasure getting Diane hooked on Judy patterns!  Because our retreat was full with a waiting list Diane would head back to her home (just down the road) each night to catch a few winks (or bottle feed the calf)!  She did say she really sees the value of being able to just stay and “retreat”!  I think we will talk her into staying the night at the June retreat, which I am just finalizing the details on.

The next retreat is at the end of April at 12 Pines Retreat Center – see photos of that project below!

Our next retreat at Wimberley Quilt Ranch is for “Beginners and Finishers“.

Here are the photos from our Fire Island Hosta Retreat!

Hey Diane – this little calf greeted me when I got home Sunday! I just love these baby cows!

We had typical TX spring weather – Thursday was probably 80 degrees, windy on Friday as the front moved in, rainy on Saturday and Sunday started out crisp in the morning and turned out to be a perfect day – I even cleaned the car and took it to the car wash when I got back from retreat.  This morning it was 36 degrees, a little breezy and the heater is on!

Now time to unpack and get ready for the next adventure!

What are you doing!

Today – I made ART!

Usually I make quilts!  When I finished this one my first thought was “I made art today!”  Even hubby said “WOW!”

I purchased the fabrics in April of this year at The Quilted Skein in LaGrange, TX.  I had not even opened the pattern before we got there  and I started pulling fabrics.  Then I had to do a quick read to see what my fabric requirements would be as I was not following the same placement as the cover photo.  Fabric pulled and acquired in less than 45 minutes.

I didn’t get started on this project right away as I was working on some market samples for Island Batik and Quiltworx as well as many other projects that were not all sewing related.

After I completed the pieced leaves, the gold and purple ones – I said “Oh Oh it is quite LSU!”  Nothing wrong with that, just not what I was going for.

Enough pieced here to lay it out to get a feel for what it will look like.
Enough pieced here to lay it out to get a feel for what it will look like.

Then I started adding my other fabrics and it just came to life!

Got to lay out a few more pieces while I was with the Golden Needles Quilt Guild

I am sure it will be a little bright for some of you – but that is the fun about ART – it is in the eye of the beholder!

WOW!

No Sleeping at this “Captain’s” Wheel – RETREAT!

Last Thursday – Sunday I hosted a retreat for 10 fabulous women.  The pattern we worked on was “Captain’s Wheel” by Judy Niemeyer.  Held at the Wimberly Quilt Ranch in Wimberly, TX we found a little bit of paradise.  Many of us even found time to enjoy the screened in porches and watch the deer, birds and squirrels.  We were quite impressed by how much one particular squirrel could consume!

Our retreat was a HUGE success, much in part to Ronda, she was our cook and chief bottle washer.  She even found some time to sew.  Check out her blog for this retreat here.
